Reproductive Health (RH) Services through Outreach Medical Clinics to Remote, Vulnerable, and Conflict Affected Populations of Nepal
__________________________________________________________________________________
KATHMANDU, Nepal, 2 July 2009 – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Nepal is initiating a new project entitled “Delivering Reproductive Health (RH) Services through Outreach Medical Clinics to Remote, Vulnerable, and Conflict Affected Populations of Nepal.” This 12 month project will be conducted in two districts: Kalikot in the Mid-Western Region and Accham in the Far-Western Region of Nepal. The project is funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO) through ADRA Germany.

The overall goal of this project is to improve the access and delivery of reproductive health and basic public health services to communities affected by conflict and remoteness through mobile reproductive health camps and other support services. At least 350 women will receive surgery to correct severe uterine prolapse and an estimated 21,200 people will receive basic and reproductive health treatment at mobile camps.

Project activities include identifying and counseling for gender based violence cases, providing knowledge on family planning methods, preventing sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and AIDS, and preventing and treating uterine prolapse. Local health service providers will receive training on treating basic reproductive health problems, pessary ring insertions, reproductive health in emergency settings, and gender based violence. General community awareness will be raised on preventative and general reproductive health care, uterine prolapse, and HIV/AIDS through dissemination of information, education and communication (IEC) materials, video shows and street dramas.

ADRA Nepal is implementing this project in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population, Department of Health Services, Regional Health Directorates, Nepalgunj Medical College Teaching Hospital, District Health Offices and other district stakeholders and government agencies.

Since 2005, ADRA Nepal has implemented similar projects funded by ECHO and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 18 districts in the Far and Mid-Western Regions of Nepal. Currently, 113,315 women, men and youth have received health services through ADRA Nepal’s health camps and 447 women have received uterine prolapse surgery.

ADRA is an independent humanitarian agency established in 1984 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church for the specific purpose of providing individual and community development and disaster relief. Registered with the Social Welfare Council, ADRA Nepal has steadily grown over the last 21 years and now has a diverse program in 34 districts of Nepal. ADRA Nepal serves people without regard to their ethnic, political, or religious association. It simply helps people in need, especially those most vulnerable.
